 Overview of Student Reports
REPORTS. The Web Management provides instructors and administrators with a wide range of detailed reports on student/client activity in the Instructional Systems Inc. curriculum courses. The reports can be classified into groups in two different ways.

Reports by function. One way to look at the reports is by report function. There are three basic report functions, SUMMARY, EXCEPTION, and ACTIVITY.

    • Summary reports provide totals and averages for the given report type. For example, a summary report might show total time spent, or total lessons taken in a particular course or date period. Summary reports are used by administrators to show that students enrolled in the curriculum are meeting program goals, such as time on task, or progress in the curriculum courses.
    • Exception reports allow for totals and averages to be produced with additional conditions that produce information about students who do or do not meet the given conditions. For example, an exception report might list all students who have at least 20 hours time in the curriculum, or those lessons with scores above 80%, or those students who have not used the curriculum in a given date period.
    • Activity reports show the results of the individual sessions that a student takes. Activity reports show these sessions by course, date, and lesson. Activity reports are generally used by administrators to permanently record student activity in the curriculum. Activity reports provide the accountability that students have used the curriculum in the software, by individual session, and can be used to show the students use of the curriculum over time.

Reports by type. Another way to look at the reports in by report type. There are 8 basic report types, PERFORMANCE, SESSION, LESSON, MODULE, COURSE, DAILY, WEEKLY, and MONTHLY.

    • Performance reports show aggregate and statistical information about particular student data items recorded by the courseware, such as the number of exercises attempted, the number of exercises correct, and the length of each session.
    • Session reports show information about individual student sessions, showing the date of the session, the time of the session, the number of exercises correct and attempted, the course and lesson taken during that session, and a lesson sequence number to insure integrity of the data.
    • Lesson reports show information about individual lessons in particular courses. There are many lessons in each of the courses, and information about student work in particular or selected groups of lessons can be obtained. Lesson reports are generally used by instructors to determine if students have mastered particular items in the curriculum course. For example, the lesson exception report might be used to find lessons that are giving students trouble, as reflected by low scores in the lessons.
    • Module reports show information about individual modules in particular courses. Each course is divided into a number of modules on a broad skill area, and information about student work in particular or selected groups of modules can be obtained. Module reports are generally used by instructors to determine if students have mastered particular parts of the curriculum course.
    • Course reports show information about student usage of particular courses. The ISI curriculum software has over 15 different courses, and information about student work in particular or selected groups of courses can be obtained.
    • Daily, Weekly, and Monthly reports show information about student usage of the curriculum software during given time intervals. These reports are generally used to insure that students are using the curriculum properly over the given date ranges. For example, the Weekly report can be used to show how many hours that students have put into the curriculum during given weeks of the year.

With these two classifications, there are currently 15 reports available:

PERFORMANCE SUMMARY, PERFORMANCE ACTIVITY, SESSION ACTIVITY, LESSON EXCEPTION, LESSON SUMMARY, LESSON ACTIVITY, MODULE SUMMARY, MODULE ACTIVITY, COURSE SUMMARY, COURSE ACTIVITY, DAILY SUMMARY, DAILY ACTIVITY, WEEKLY SUMMARY, MONTHLY SUMMARY, and MONTHLY ACTIVITY.

All reports have a number of common characteristics for ease of use:

    • All reports allow for sorting of the data by student ID number, student secondary ID number (which may be a case number or social security number), and by student last name.
    • All reports allow for data to be selected only from a given set of courses with an easy to use check-box approach to course selection.
    • All reports allow for the omission of insignificant sessions from the reporting, such as sessions where the student does not take any exercises, or does not spend any time.
    • All reports are password protected to prevent access by unauthorized personnel.
    • All reports allow for data to be selected only from a given date range.
    • All reports may be enabled or disabled for particular projects.

Several of the reports have special characteristics that simplify project management:

    • Optional e-mail of results of the report to a given e-mail account.
    • Production of comma separated data in a text file that can be imported into third-party databases and spreadsheets for further analysis.
    • Color highlighting to indicate relevant features of the data.
