Offer Remedial Courses to Your
Students With ISI's Distance Learning Solution e
Instructional Systems Inc. (ISI) has developed four Web-based college remedial courses in the subject areas of math, reading, and writing. The material is geared to the goal of preparing students to pass college entrance exams. Many of the students who use ISI's courseware enroll in their college's remedial programs whenever they wish and proceed, with the help of a mentor assigned by the college, at their own pace. For over two decades Instructional Systems, Inc. has been at the forefront of computer assisted learning, providing educational programs to schools, community colleges, social service training centers, and job training facilities. We have worked with community colleges across the country to help students develop the necessary skills they need to be successful at school and on the job. Community college staff serve as mentors in this project. ISI's remedial math, reading, and writing mechanics courses are accessible on any computer with access to the World Wide Web. The courseware runs completely over the World Wide Web. Students use the Internet to communicate with teachers and mentors. Student progress via tests and quizzes is automatically logged to secure Internet sites.Instructional Systems has included the latest advances in information technology. The sophisticated client tracking system is used extensively by mentors to track the progress of geographically dispersed participants for which they are accountable.
The College Remedial Mathematics Course is divided into five chapters. Each lesson within a chapter provides instruction on a specific topic. Guided practice exercises allow students to reinforce the material provided in the instructional portion of the lesson. The five chapters include: Numerical Operations, Data Analysis, Measurement and Geometry, Patterns and Relations, and Fundamentals of Algebra. This courseware is "adaptive," so it generates problems that are right at the student's level. Examples are generated, not stored, so the student can continue as long as he or she needs.
The College Remedial Writing Mechanics course is divided into two sections: Instruction and Modeling, and Application. The Instruction and Modeling section deals with grammar and usage, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Students are led through generalizations and examples for each area. The Application section contains a variety of texts where students practice and apply the writing skills developed in the Instruction and Modeling section.
