Focus on Remediation Program
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What do we need to do to set this program up at our school?
There are three steps you'll take in setting up the Focus on Remediation demonstration pilot:

1. Mentor collects enrollment information and enrolls students online.

2. ISI emails student and mentor to confirm enrollment.
3. Student uses online courses as long as he or she needs to.

How are the courses delivered? Are they all web-based or is a CD-ROM used?
The courses were designed so that both modes may be used depending on the choice of the college or student. The courses may be delivered entirely on the Web or in a hybrid mode where the management is web-based while the actual courses are on a CD-ROM.

Is ISI offering courseware or a remediation service?
ISI is offering a remediation service.

What is the price of the remediation service?
The price is $350 per student for each course or $1,000 per student for all four courses. Internet access is not included.

Is there a time limit for the student to be enrolled in a course?
The student is enrolled for as long as it takes to pass your entrance requirement. It is up to the college to determine when the student is ready for college level work. The time required will vary with each student and each college.

Does the student enroll in ISI or at our college?
Students are enrolled at your college.ISI gives each college its own web-site for on-line remediation students. When students access the site they see your college name.

Can other colleges see the scores of our students? How is privacy maintained?
ISI has build in three levels of access security. The students see only their own scores. The mentors see only the scores of the students assigned to them. The administrators see only the scores for their own colleges.

How many students can we enroll?
Enrollment is ongoing and the ISI system can accommodate any number of students at any time. The format is open entry, open exit. The student does not have to wait for a class to begin.

Every college has different standards. Whose standards do the students meet?
The students meet the requirements of your college and complete the program when they pass your placement or entrance examination.

What is the role of the college mentor?
The mentor uses the ISI management system from his or her own computer station to monitor the progress of the student. The mentor tracks the student’s time, scores, and other measures. The mentor communicates with the student through e-mail or telephone and may meet with the student if necessary.

We have never used distance learning. Do we need any special equipment at our college to use the ISI distance learning remediation program?
No. The students and mentors only need access to Internet enabled personal computers. ISI’s computer center does everything else. The college needs no additional centralized computer system.

Can the student work at a job and still use the remediation series?
Yes. Most students who use the remediation series work at jobs that prevent them from attending campus classes. The student can access the remediation courseware from home, from work, from campus or any combination at any time.

Can these courses be installed on our campus computer lab?
Yes. This option is applicable to students who can come to your campus regularly for remedation.

What about the deadline for this program? When can we start? What if we want to participate a few months down the road? Are there any other free pilots we can use at our college?
We're no longer accepting applications for the pilot program. The 50 colleges which have been selected for the program can start in the summer or fall, --whenever it is most convenient for them.
